Altered Environments Portfolio

I was thrilled to be invited into the print portfolio Altered Environments curated by April Flanders. Altered Environments is a curated printmaking portfolio that responds to the issue of marine bioinvasions. The portfolio will include 25 artists from diverse backgrounds, utilizing a wide range of styles and print techniques. Aquatic invasive species are a true threat to biodiversity around the world. Artists are encouraged to consider the many ecosystems that are currently under threat from marine bioinvaders.

The finished prints will be exhibited at Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, Boone, NC (Spring 23), Pyramid Atlantic (TBA) and at the 11th International Conference on Marine Bioinvasions, Annapolis, Maryland May 15-19, 2022 (Postponed due to COVID). One set of the prints will become part of Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, MD.

I was immediately drawn to bryozoan Cribrilina mutabilis due to its delicate beauty, repetition and form. It seemed to fit right in with work I had been creating that uses the multiple/module, and my interest in invasive species, and the relationship between beauty and destruction.

I was put in contact with Thomas Trott PhD, and Mathew Dick PhD. Both scientists studied these fascinating Bryozoans. For this project, I chose to work with beautiful images taken by Trott.

Below are images of Cribrilina mutabilis and the work I created.
